3 Tough Truths About Spirituality

Updated: Mar 24, 2022

Spirituality means to believe in something bigger than yourself (i.e., higher power, higher self, God, universe, etc.) while also searching for purpose in life. Although the definition is loose in the sense that spirituality can be interpreted differently by every individual, there are some common misconceptions about the general practice of spirituality that I would like to share. I am a witch, Reiki Master, and intuitive reader who has been studying spirituality for over a decade, and during this time I have seen spirituality continually being misunderstood. Today, I hope to clarify by sharing some tough truths that some might not be ready to hear yet.

You can watch the video or read the written version below.

1. Spirituality Is Not an Aesthetic

I see this a lot especially on Instagram where ‘spiritual’ influencers bathe in sunlight on the beach, decorate themselves in crystal jewelry, and slip-on flowy clothing. Despite the fact that these experiences/things are popular in the spirituality community, it’s important to remember where the line is between a lifestyle and an aesthetic. An aesthetic is the appreciation of specific characteristics of beauty (i.e the way something looks). Whereas a lifestyle is specific choices you make that adhere to certain values or standards. Being truly spiritual doesn’t mean buying the prettiest crystals or saying ‘love and light’ all the time. This is a surface-level existence. Spirituality is a lifestyle that dives deep into one’s own psyche. What is your life purpose? How can you use spiritual tools like crystals to change your life? What shadows do you need to confront? This is where divine truth is found. You have to go deeper than as aesthetic.

2. Being spiritual Will Not Solve All of Your Problems

When discovering a new tool or belief system there is a glimmer of hope that this will be the key to everything. It can be tempting to fall into the trap of believing that everything in your life will now be solved. But the truth is, simply being spiritual will not solve all of your problems. That’s like placing a crystal in front of you and watching it, expecting it to miraculously transform in front of you. A friend of mine once heard that placing an amethyst in your kitchen will help stop binge-eating. They found one at a new age shop and tucked it away on a high cabinet. Months later, they reported to me that they haven’t stopped binge-eating. I asked, “did you clear it regularly? “, “Did you infuse it with the intention of managing binge-eating?”, “did you work through your binge-eating triggers with your amethyst?” Their mouth fell open. It wasn’t their fault that they didn’t know all of this because they weren’t taught it. But it’s an important lesson that just claiming something won’t solve all of your problems. This leads me to my next and final point.

3. You Have To Be Willing To Do the Work In Order To Get Results

In order to get results on your spiritual journey, you have to actively do your work. What this looks like will be different for everyone. For you it may be creating a mindfulness practice, getting in touch with your body, learning how to set boundaries, or doing shadow work to deal with a specific challenge. This work cannot be faked nor can it be skipped. You have to keep showing up even when it’s hard. You have to keep making yourself a priority. And you have to get past the surface-level existence to get to the juicy parts of life: your own authenticity.

Spirituality is a welcoming and rewarding lifestyle choice. I recommend it to anyone and everyone looking for a practice where you make your rules and live by them wholeheartedly. I share these tough truths not to discourage you from diving into spirituality but to help you see past the façade common myths have created. There is so much beauty that can be found in spirituality; you just have to know how to get past the bullshit and truly see it for yourself.
